A game for all
Competition doesn’t matter
Particularly when you’re starting out in golf, the most important thing is that you enjoy yourself.
Bend some rules
Certain rules are unavoidable, like teeing off from the tee box and repairing your divots. But if you don’t want to play from the rough or bunker or over water, drop a ball in the fairway. If you want to tee it up on the fairway, do it. Do anything to make your experience more enjoyable.
Simplify things
Take a sleeve of golf balls, a short iron, and your putter and play 18 holes of approach shots. Use the walk between the tee box and approach to simply enjoy being outdoors. Better yet, bring a friend along.
Book a round >

Stay in play
Sometimes it’s best to be aggressive
Some tee boxes are scary. That’s down to course design, something you can’t control. But with an understanding of your dispersion patterns, you can adjust your aim to minimise risk. That frees you up to approach a daunting hole with more confidence.
Not sure what your dispersion pattern is? Let’s get on the range and find out.
Discover your dispersion >
“Let’s say there’s a hazard that extends down the fairway and stops at 180 metres. You know your hybrid has a tighter dispersion than your driver. But you also know your driver dispersion gets your ball well beyond the hazard, taking it out of play altogether and giving you a shorter approach. That’s when being aggressive is the better choice.”
Better decisions save shots
A more enjoyable golfing experience isn’t only about improving your swing. Simply making better choices has a positive impact. We’re here to help you with both.

Please adhere to the Covid protocols

Members might feel by now that Covid protocols are just not worth it anymore. Unfortunately can we not relax on the protocols just yet. We are monitored not only by GolfRSA but also by members and visitors using our facilities. I therefore plead that we adhere to the protocols especially the wearing of masks while we are in close contact with other people.

When we have our drinks after the game please remember to wear your mask when ordering your drink at the bar. I do realise that to drink and wear a mask is a very difficult thing so we all understand that you will have to remove the mask to get contact with your drink. Thanks to all those that still keep up to the demands of Covid protocols. I really appreciate that.

First “views” of the planned restaurant and bar upgrading project

Members would be aware of the constant “noise” from the “old” bar area but I can assure all of you that what is busy happening will benefit all those that will use that facility in the future. I had a quick glimpse of the planned interior decorating of the area and share some of it with pride with all our members. If everything goes according to plan we will “open” this new area by the beginning of December 2020.

Refrigerated cool waterpoints now active

Members will see that we have at last installed the three refrigerated waterpoints at the 4th hole, the 14th hole and the 23rd hole. The reservoirs of these cooling units are not that big so please understand if a fourball of players want to fill all their waterbottles at once that it might take a bit of time.

Your feedback on their functionality will be appreciated.

A big word of thanks must go out to the three “sponsors” for these waterpoints. This really was a team effort from the word go.

Hole 4 was sponsored by the Sattar group who regularly plays their Poise Cup games here at PGC. Zafer Sattar is also a longstanding member of PGC. The elctricity is “sponsored” by the BMHOA.

Hole 14 was sponsored by our Chairman of the Board, Christian van Schalkwyk. He also provides the electricity to this unit.

Hole 23 was sponsored by Mike and Aletta Ling with Brian Lawrie helping with the electricity supply to the point.

Nameplates will be manufactured and attached soon.

Club Draw first draw results – 16 October 2020

The Club Draw had it’s first draw on Friday 16 October. Congratulations to the first winners of this draw. See the video of the actual draw.

As expected, did we get a number of requests for possible “late” entries. The decision was made that those who do not have a ticket for the draw can still get one but the buy-in remains the same at R1200. If you want to do it by debit order you now will have to arrange with our financial section to determine the correct amount according to the date that you want to start. This means everybody can still buy-in so please let us do that because it is for a good cause helping the captains committee to create funds for projects on the course

Entries still open and the 2nd Draw draw takes place on Friday the 20th of November.

We have 79 entries!

  Showers fully functional

Please note that we are back to “normal” providing towels to the those that would like to wash off their bad round… or maybe even good ones.

Provisional ball holed

This week’s question was: If you hole out with your provisional ball, can you abandon your original?

Player (A) hits his/her third shot over the green and it is likely lost in the love grass at the back of hole no 22.

A game for all

Generations can play together

How many sports enable grandparents to play with their children AND grandchildren? Golf is a game that can connect three generations; that’s an amazing opportunity.
Share the joy
Can you put together a family four-ball? Imagine spending quality time with your spouse, your children, siblings, or parents out on the course. We want to welcome your family.

Get your family on the fairway

Let us help you put together that four-ball. If you’ve got family members – no matter their age – who don’t currently play golf, then let’s introduce them to the best active pastime in the world.
Get them involved >

Stay in play

Be prepared for any course

There is a way you can prepare for the challenges of any golf course, even if it’s your first time playing it. By using your dispersion patterns you’ll have a much clearer idea of where to aim. This makes navigating new situations a lot easier.
Not sure what your dispersion pattern is? Let’s get on the range and find out.
Discover your dispersion >
“Let’s say you encounter a sharp dogleg left but can’t hit the draw required to get around the corner. When you know your dispersion patterns, you’ll know what club is best to get you to the bend while staying in the fairway. So you might not have gotten around the corner, but you’re still sitting pretty with a clear view for your second.”

Better decisions save shots

A more enjoyable golfing experience isn’t only about improving your swing. Simply making better choices has a positive impact. We’re here to help you with both.

And we have a winner

Thank you to the members who attended the first Club Draw on Friday the 16th. Well done to the winners, your monies will be loaded onto your members card.

The winners
George Thompson – R1000
Rolf Moschinsky – R600
Wynne Vice – R400

We have decided to include an attendance prize. It works on the same bases as the lucky draw, if your number is drawn and you are present then you win two bottles of the “Wine of the Month”. If you are not present then the prize will be  carried over to the next month. So next month four bottles will be up for grabs!

Club Draw extended – you can still enter

The Club Draw closing date of 30th of September 2020 has been extended. You can now enter the Club Draw at any given time, however, the full amount of R1200 still needs to be paid to be eligible for the monthly or final draw. We need you, our members, to get to 100 entries to make the draw worth something to the club and to those that entered.

The next draw takes place on Friday the 20th of November.

We have 80 entries!

Tallest trees catch the most wind

Members would have seen that we had quite a few – five to be exact – trees that were blown over during the last two weeks. Luckily, no serious damage was done to any property or even to the golf course, but the fallen trees have created other problems.

Firstly, to get a tree feller in during this time is quite a challenge due to them being busy felling trees all over the region because of the high winds. Secondly, “new” hazards have been created on the course (see Mr Rules’ input this week).

Hopefully by next week the evidence of the fallen trees will be removed and we will have the full course to ourselves again.

Some new obstacles on the course.

Restaurant and bar upgrading project progresses

Members would by now know about the construction work that is going on in the old bistro and bar area. For those who are still not in the loop, know that we are creating a wonderful entertainment area incorporating the veranda in the process as well.

Construction is progressing well and will we have the shell ready for the interior designers by end of October. If everything goes according to plan we will try and “open” this new area by the beginning of December 2020.

The upgrades are coming along nicely.

Club Draw closing date extended – 14 October 2020

The Club Draw closing date of 30th of September 2020 was extended to the 14th of October 2020 after a number of members “missed” the date and pleaded for an extension. We currently have 78 entries and would like to try and reach the 100 mark to make the winnings bigger.

A decision was also made that should “late entries” want to come into the draw they can do so, but will have to pay the full amount of R1200 as if they were in the draw from the first draw. Come on members, we need to get to 100 entries to make the draw worth something to the club and to those that entered.

The first Draw will take place on Friday 16 October 2020.
We have 78 entries!

Ladies Raffle

We had a R100 Ladies Raffle to win a R4000 voucher to use in the Paarl Pro Shop. Ben and Melaney did the draw yesterday and the
lucky number was 29.

Our winner was Madeleine Tully whose husband Shaun bought the ticket for her. She was thrilled and had this to say about her win:

“I am absolutely overwhelmed. Happy to spend it all at my favourite golf shop with the lovely girls – Melaney and Elana’s assistance.”

Congrats Madeline on your amazing win! There are loads of great goodies for you to choose from in store that will help to take your game to the next level.

Our happy winner, Madeleine Tully.

Lower your score without

changing technique

Only golf test robots hit it dead straight every time. Yet many golfers begin every hole trying to do just that. This leads to dropped shots, higher scores and less fun. Dispersion patterns are easy to determine and once you understand them, you’ll know where to aim to minimise your risk of landing in hazards or out of bounds.
Not sure what your dispersion pattern is? Let’s get on the range and find out.
Discover your dispersion >
“Your dispersion pattern is the area that you usually land the ball. It makes club selection a lot simpler and improves your aim. For instance, when you know that you land your driver within a 40-metre area (dispersion), you’ll have a much better idea of where to aim to give yourself the best chance of scoring. This applies through the bag.”

Lower your score now

A more enjoyable golf experience isn’t only about improving your swing. Knowing how you usually hit each club in your bag makes a huge difference. We’ll arm you with the knowledge to aim better and score lower.

A game for all

What does it mean to be ‘a golfer’?

Do you only consider yourself ‘a golfer’ when you’re shooting under 85? Or when you’re driving the ball over 200 metres? Is the term ‘golfer’ reserved for men, while women are consigned to ‘lady golfer’? No, no and no. If you’re on a golf course swinging a club at a ball, you’re a golfer.
Get them involved
You don’t need to be a certain age, gender or have a specific skill level to be a golfer. But you do need an opportunity to start playing. Someone to introduce you to the game. Could you be that someone? If you have a relative, friend or colleague who you think would enjoy being a golfer, why not gift them a lesson or bring them along to the course?

Saretha holing out again

Congratulations to Saretha Maritz who had her third hole-in-one in her life on Tuesday the 6th of October during the ladies’ competition. She decided that the 23rd hole would play faster if she holed out with only one shot. She also did the swim for honour in the clubhouse dam with grace. Watch the video below of her interview as well as the now famous swim.

Well done on your ace, Saretha!

   Bunker sand got attention

Members would have experienced that real “loose sand” bunker play, which should be back in your arsenal soon as we have loosened the bunker sand on most of the holes. Thanks to all the members who came to us and thanked us for doing that. To those that told me that they have just mastered the hard bunkers and that they now have to adapt again feel free to book a lesson on bunker play with Ben.

Playing golf at PGC during Level 1 lockdown

I know this might be boring by now but please realise that we are still under Level 1 lockdown rules, which have not changed since their inception.

Thanks to those members (and visitors) who makes our work easier by adhering to the regulations and rules. We appreciate your continues support and help. To the few that alway need to push the boundaries please realise that your actions might cause the club to close, and many other golf courses for that matter. It is not that difficult…

Many moons ago

Thanks to Anville van Wyk who helped with the identification of the two gentlemen in the middle.
